January 27, the day Auschwitz was liberated, is International Holocaust Memorial Day. The world remembers victims of the Holocaust and other genocides on this day. Students have developed a programme at AUC to raise awareness, to discuss what happened and to commemorate the many that did not survive crimes of genocide.
16.30—18.00 Forum: Diverse Memories
Amsterdam University College has students from many countries, and with different collective memories on the Holocaust. Students will hold a penal discussion with each other on how their countries deal with their past and their role in the holocaust.
20.30—21.30 Discussion: Relevance of the Holocaust
Discussion led by Anna Timmerman, Director of Human Rights Watch Netherlands, on the lessons we draw from the Holocaust. Why is this relevant now? Will it ever happen again? Did it already happen? Or should we stop focussing on the Holocaust, because it happened so long ago?
